Germany denies 'elite bonds' plan

(AP) ? Germany insisted Monday that it has no plans to float bonds together with the eurozone's five other triple A rated nations and use the proceeds to provide assistance to some of the single currency bloc's indebted members, such as Italy and Spain.

The Finance Ministry's denial came as the International Monetary Fund also dismissed reports it was planning a euro600 billion bailout fund for Italy, and credit rating agency Moody's warned that the "rapid escalation" of Europe's financial crisis is threatening the credit worthiness of all eurozone governments, even the most highly rated. Only six of the eurozone's 17 countries have the top rating ? Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Finland.

Despite the denials, the markets appear to be in a forgiving mood Monday. With the future of the euro hanging in the balance, according to many in the markets, there are hopes that the recent signs of deterioration in the debt crisis will finally get Europe's leaders to agree on a package of measures that can ease market concerns over whether the euro currency itself can survive. The Stoxx 50 of leading European shares was up 2.6 percent, while the euro was 0.6 percent higher at $1.3362.

One proposal that's often been touted as a long-term solution is the issuance of eurobonds, whereby the 17 euro nations pool together to raise money in the markets. However, Germany has opposed the principle of eurobonds since it would expose its taxpayers to the bad debt of weaker countries. As Europe's largest economy, Germany already funds the bulk of the existing bailouts.

The idea of "elite bonds" may help assuage those concerns as Germany would only join up with other top-rated nations.

However, German Finance Ministry spokesman Johannes Blankenheim denied a Monday report in Die Welt daily that initial plans on issuing the joint bonds have already been drawn up as part of a wider package to be presented by Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the next EU summit.

Blankenheim denied that such triple A bonds were among topics discussed last Friday when German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble hosted his counterparts from Finland and the Netherlands in Berlin. He insisted Berlin remains focused on instruments of long-term stability.

"We are working intensively on a stability union," Blankenheim said in a statement. "We want to secure this through changes to the treaties."

"That is the way to win back trust in the markets and the right signal to convince the world's financial investors that the euro is and remains a stable currency," Blankenheim said.

Meanwhile, Moody's warned in its report that the eurozone "is approaching a junction, leading either to closer integration or greater fragmentation."

After last week cutting its rating on Hungary to junk status, Moody's says more European sovereign borrowers risk falling to that level even in a positive scenario in which the eurozone doesn't split apart.

That's because Moody's considers that Europe's leaders may not agree on a comprehensive resolution to the crisis until "after a series of shocks" that block ever more EU members from access to financial markets.

Fed lent banks trillions during crisis, report says

While the nation's largest banks were publicly reassuring nervous investors of their stability during the height of the financial crisis, they were also quietly approaching the Federal Reserve, hat in hand. The total price tag: $7.77 trillion, many times the amount of the better-known TARP bailout.

The magnitude of the government's assistance to struggling banks allowed them to grow even bigger and continue paying executives billions in compensation, a report?in Bloomberg Markets January issue said Monday.

A win in court against a group representing the banks and a FOIA request filed by Bloomberg LP revealed the extent of the central bank's largesse ? as well as the $13 billion in profits banks earned from those bailouts. The so called "big six" ? JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley ??accounted for $4.8 billion of that total ? nearly a quarter of their net income during that time.?

Those borrowed trillions were a deeply-buried secret. It appears that even high-ranking Fed officials didn't know about the scale of the handouts. According to Bloomberg, then-president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Gary H. Stern ?wasn?t aware of the magnitude,? and unnamed sources say that even top aides to Treasury Department head Henry Paulson were kept in the dark.?

The six biggest banks in the country received a total $160 billion in TARP funds, but as much as $460 billion from the Fed, raising the question as to how and why this nearly $8 trillion in loans, guarantees and limits remained under wraps for so long. According to the Fed, the massive scale of banks' borrowing ??and the red ink that prompted it ? had to be kept secret to avoid spooking investors and prompting a panic or bank runs that would have had even more devastating consequences on the shaken economy.?

The Fed defended its actions back then by contending that the biggest financial institutions in the country were too big to fail ? a phrase that has become a bone of contention among lawmakers, some of whom argue that a "too big to fail" bank is one that's too big to exist.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown sponsored a bill last year that would cap a bank's non-deposit liabilities at 2 percent of gross domestic product, and crack down on workarounds banks currently use to bypass a 1994 law that prohibits any one bank from holding more than 10 percent of all deposits in the country.

After Ohio State Clobbers Michigan, Cuddle Up With Professor Feynman

It's Thanksgiving weekend, so when you're footballed up, (or is it footballed out? Or maybe you're football indifferent?) whatever you are, here's a nice way to spend five minutes: Cuddle up with the great physicist Richard Feynman and hear him talk about beauty, curiosity and ? most important of all ? about doubt. Doubt is what drives Feynman's game. And boy oh boy, he's got game ? plus, the pictures are beautiful.

If you like this one, there are more. There's Feynman on curiosity and Feynman on honors. And, if they'd make it, I'd buy tickets to Feynman on Anything.

Astros fire GM Wade and president Smith (AP)

HOUSTON ? The Houston Astros fired general manager Ed Wade and team president Tal Smith on Sunday night in the first of the changes promised by new owner Jim Crane.

The moves come less than a week after the sale of the team from Drayton McLane to Crane was officially completed last Tuesday, a transaction that requires the franchise to move from the NL Central to the AL West in 2013.

In a news conference on the day owners approved the sale on Nov. 17, Crane vowed to meet with all the executives and "make some very, very quick adjustments."

And he did, with the Astros announcing the moves late Sunday night in a statement from new team president and chief executive officer George Postolos.

"With the change in ownership, we would like a fresh start in baseball operations," Postolos said. "We have told Ed Wade and Tal Smith that we are making a change."

The search for a new general manager will begin immediately. Assistant general manager Dave Gottfried will serve as interim GM, but will not be considered for the permanent job.

Postolos said the Astros want a candidate who has a strong commitment to player development necessary for long-term success.

"Our goal is to consistently compete for a championship, and we know the first step towards that goal is to develop one of the top farm systems in baseball," Postolos said. "We will hire the best candidate available to achieve our goal."

Wade was hired in September 2007 after spending the previous two years as a professional scout for the San Diego Padres. He was the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1998 until he was fired after the 2005 season.

The Astros made a 13-game improvement in Wade's first season as general manager and finished 86-75. But that would be their only winning season under Wade as they won 74 games in 2009 and 76 in 2010 before posting this year's franchise-worst mark of 56-106.

In the last two years Wade traded away stars such Lance Berkman, Michael Bourn, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence for mostly young prospects, saying he had "inherited a pretty barren farm system" that he had to replenish.

Smith, who has been team president since 1994, has spent more than 50 years as a baseball executive and more than 30 of those years have been with the Astros. He worked for the franchise in its first season in 1962 when the team was known as the Houston Colt .45s and remained in Houston until 1972.

He spent some time working for the Yankees before returning as general manager of the Astros from 1975-80.

Smith's input was key in the development of both the Astrodome and Minute Maid Park. A small hill in center field at Minute Maid Park is known as Tal's Hill as a nod to his work on the project.

Black Friday online sales growth lags last year (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Amazon.com Inc, eBay Inc and other e-commerce companies had a strong "Black Friday," but the industry's growth rate lagged last year's surge in online buying on the traditional first day of the holiday shopping season.

Online shopping jumped 24.3 percent on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, versus the same period a year earlier, IBM Benchmark, which tracks transactions on websites of 500 retailers, said on Saturday.

IBM was expecting growth of about 15 percent. Higher-than-expected online buying was partly driven by increased use of mobile devices, it said.

Some of the best-performing retailers also did a good job informing consumers about online promotions ahead of the crucial post-Thanksgiving shopping day, said John Squire, chief strategy officer at IBM Smarter Commerce.

Mercent, a company founded in 2005 which helps retailers sell through e-commerce channels including Amazon, eBay and Google Inc's Internet search engine, reported a 23-percent jump in Black Friday same-store sales by clients.

"E-commerce continues to grow on an absolute basis and take additional market share from (traditional) bricks and mortar retailers," said Eric Best, chief executive of Mercent and a former Amazon executive.

Best expects a "huge" Cyber Monday - which this year falls on November 28 - but he warned that this doesn't mean the whole holiday season will be strong.

Cyber Monday is the first work day after Thanksgiving, when workers often use office computers to shop online. Last year, over $1 billion was spent on Cyber Monday, making it the heaviest online shopping day in history, according to ComScore.

"Holiday shopping is becoming more front-loaded around Black Friday and Cyber Monday," Mercent's Best said. "All of this is great news, but it's still early in this 45-day shopping season."

WEATHER EFFECT

Last year, Mercent clients saw same-store sales growth of 30 percent on Black Friday. Best said slower growth this year may have been caused by better weather.

"The weather was really good this year, which can have an effect on the amount of screen time," Best added. "People were outside shopping offline or they weren't shopping at all."

Amazon saw some of the strongest growth again this year, according to ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell on websites run by Amazon, eBay and other e-commerce companies.

ChannelAdvisor clients saw same-store sales via Amazon jump 49.8 percent on Black Friday, versus a year earlier.

Traditional retailers offered Black Friday deals earlier this year, but Amazon aggressively matched this strategy by running Black Friday promotions online starting on November 21, according to Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor.

Still, on Black Friday in 2010, ChannelAdvisor clients saw same-store sales growth of about 80 percent via Amazon, Wingo noted.

Sellers on eBay generated same-store sales growth of 15.1 percent on Black Friday this year, down from 15.5 percent year-over-year growth in 2010, he added.

MOBILE SHOPPING SURGES

Mobile shopping surged on Black Friday but remained a relatively small part of overall online commerce.

EBay said U.S. shoppers bought almost two and a half times as many items via mobile devices this past Black Friday compared to 2010.

PayPal, eBay's online payments business, saw a six-fold increase in global mobile transaction volume on Black Friday, versus the same day last year.

More than 14 percent of Black Friday traffic on retail websites came from mobile devices, up from 5.6 percent a year ago, according to IBM.

eBay said it offered an XBOX 360 250GB Kinect gaming system from Microsoft for $259.99 the evening before Black Friday that sold out in 20 minutes - at a rate of 75 units per minute.

Best sellers on Amazon.com on Black Friday included the company's Kindle Fire tablet computer, a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 Waterproof Digital Camera and a Mr. Coffee Single Serve coffee machine powered by Keurig, according to an Amazon spokeswoman.

Ashwin lifts India after Tendulkar agony (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Sachin Tendulkar fell agonisingly short of his 100th international century once again before off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lifted India's spirits with his maiden test ton on the fourth day of the third test against West Indies on Friday.

India finally reached 482 all out in reply to West Indies' 590 and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha sent back Adrian Barath (3) and Kirk Edwards (17) early to raise India's hopes of an unlikely victory,

However, Kraigg Brathwaite (34 not out) and Darren Bravo (27 not out) then thwarted the visitors to take West Indies to 81 for two at the close.

"We are taking it step by step. We are two down right now and coming tomorrow we hope to have a good start and work it from there and see how it goes," West Indies paceman Ravi Rampaul told reporters.

"The wicket is still good for batting, not much assistance for the bowlers. We will see how it shapes up tomorrow and decide from there."

Ashwin, who took five wickets in the West Indies' innings, scored 103 to bring the smiles back to the faces of the Mumbai crowd after the disappointment of Tendulkar's latest near miss.

Ashwin hit 15 boundaries and two sixes in his 118-ball knock and steered Rampaul to the third man boundary to bring up his century. He departed to the next ball, miscuing a pull shot to leave India trailing by 108 runs.

CONFIDENCE FROM BOWLING

"He came out and started playing shots...he was pretty relaxed, the confidence from his bowling rubbed off," Virat Kohli, who forged a crucial partnership with Ashwin to save India from following on, said.

"He has taken wickets in the series, getting a hundred is always special for a bowler.

"It was good to have him scoring from one end, I could bat myself in and spend more time in the middle."

Tendulkar, unbeaten on 67 overnight, hit three boundaries and a six in the first session and looked set to secure the century that has eluded him since he last reached triple figures against South Africa during the World Cup in March.

With the whole of India celebrating every run as he closed on the landmark, Tendulkar's innings came to an abrupt end on 94 when he edged Rampaul to West Indies captain Darren Sammy at second slip.

Kohli (52) brought up his maiden half-century in tests, and with Ashwin took India past the follow-on mark.

Kohli and Ashwin stood firm and added 97 runs for the seventh wicket after India were reduced to 331-6 and needed a solid partnership in the wake of Tendulkar's shock departure.

The tail hung in with Ashwin to help him complete his 100 after Kohli hit leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo straight to Fidel Edwards at mid-on.

India had resumed on 281-3 and Sammy was rewarded for taking the second new ball immediately when Vangipurappu Laxman (32) fell to the first ball of the day's second over.

Laxman was dismissed when he drove the first ball he had faced, bowled by paceman Fidel Edwards, straight to Marlon Samuels at gully after he and Tendulkar had added 63 runs for the fourth wicket.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not last long either, clean bowled by Sammy for eight to expose the home team's tail.

Cracking The Krakow Code ? Poland?s Newest High Tech Cluster Emerges [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2011-11-24 at 12.10.04I recently had the pleasure of visiting a European city which is to a great extent a true example of how technology is changing society and business across Europe today. Once, Krakow was a city infamous for its nearness to Auschwitz and a terrifying example of how the Nazis could destroy a previously peaceful society where people of many creeds had lived together in peace. Under the Soviet occupation, it was just another grey Polish city. But since liberation in the later 1980s and the emergence of a strong Polish market economy in the 1990s/2000s, Krakow is taking its place in the technology world, along with the major hub of Warsaw, as a crucible of technology innovation. I flew to Krakow to join the burgeoning startup group there known as Hive which showcased pitches from local startups aiming to go global. While there I shot the 'mini documentary' below which gives you a flavour of some of the early startup companies in Poland.

No. 15 Purdue edges Kansas State 46-42 in overtime (AP)

CANCUN, Mexico ? Brittany Rayburn scored 16 points and No. 15 Purdue outlasted Kansas State 46-42 in overtime on Friday night in the Cancun Challenge.

KK Houser added 11 while Sam Ostarello had seven points and 11 rebounds for the Boilermakers (6-0), who are off to their best start since 2006-07.

Ostarello hit the only basket for Purdue in overtime to break a 40-40 tie. Rayburn made two free throws with 1:03 left and Houser added two more with 48.4 seconds to play to seal the victory.

Purdue won for only the second time in 48 chances when scoring under 49 points. The Boilermakers beat Kentucky 48-40 in 1999.

The Boilermakers were missing Courtney Moses, who was sidelined with a concussion.

Jalana Childs scored 23 points to lead Kansas State (3-2), which lost both of its games in Mexico.

Neither team shot well from the field with Purdue making just 30 percent while Kansas State was at 29 percent.

Scientists working hard to build a better turkey

The great majority of today's domesticated turkeys may not be able to fly, but their ancestors sure got around. The quintessential New World bird, Meleagris gallopavo, was already an Old World favorite by the time colonists in North America first celebrated any Thanksgiving feasts. Today's turkey researchers are investigating the big bird's genetic heritage and biology as part of an effort to improve several aspects of its cultivation.

In 2010, a team of researchers from numerous labs in the United States announced the sequencing of more than 90 percent of the turkey genome. This represented a big step in turkey research, but efforts continue.

"Once you identify genes, the next step is to figure out what they do," said Rami Dalloul, a poultry and immunology researcher at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg.

"What we've been doing for the past almost year is building upon that sequence and trying to figure out, are there traits in the original [wild] bird that might be useful for today's bird?" said Julie Long, a poultry researcher at the research arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Md.

The researchers have been working with the genetic material from the most popular domesticated commercial breed, the broad breasted white turkey. It is descended from turkeys domesticated in modern Mexico by predecessors of the Aztecs. The birds were well-established as a food source by the time the Conquistadors arrived. The Spanish took the birds back to Europe, and they quickly spread across the continent.

"Very quickly the domesticated turkey became, as far as I could tell, the real first New World food to be adopted in Europe," said Andrew F. Smith, a food historian and the author of "The Turkey: An American Story."

"When the Pilgrims and when the Jamestown colonists arrived, they had already eaten turkey," Smith said.

Smith said that by the 1550s, turkeys were already popular at Christmas dinners in England. When colonists came to the New World, they found large populations of wild birds that provided a reliable food source.

Colonists eventually began raising turkeys, but did not domesticate the wild birds.

"The commercial birds that we eat today were actually developed in the United States," said Long. "But they were developed on stocks that came from Europe that originally came from Mexico."

A whole different breed
After hundreds of years of breeding, today's commercial turkeys are far removed genetically from the wild turkeys from Mexico, which were already isolated from any of the five subspecies of wild turkeys found in the United States today.

The genetic sequence of the domestic turkey differs from its wild turkey relatives, and can be used to illustrate differences between the animals.

"Once you have the baseline, which is the domestic turkey, then you have a good reference genome to come back to and then make a valid comparison," said Dalloul.

Wild turkeys have a gene that makes them resistant to a type of toxic fungus sometimes found in corn and soybeans. This toxin can be deadly on its own or lower a turkey's resistance to other infections and cause death that way.

The domestic breed no longer carries that resistant genetic trait.

"If you can bring back that gene into the domestic population, then you can have these birds again more resistant to [the toxin]," said Dalloul.

No natural mating
Even the intended consequences of commercial turkey breeds have introduced complications. Breeders developed birds with more white meat. The resulting turkeys, such as the broad breasted white, grow muscle quickly, and, as the name suggests, that muscle is concentrated in the breast area.

"[The breast] protrudes quite a bit and physically gets in the way when the birds need to reproduce," said Long. "In the commercial turkey industry there are no birds that naturally mate."

The great majority of turkey farmers must therefore depend upon artificial insemination, said Long. She suggested that there may be rare exceptions among small farms raising older breeds of turkeys, called heritage breeds, which may reproduce naturally. Artificial insemination is a laborious job in turkey facilities, as the sperm from male toms must be collected and female hens inseminated weekly.

"The amazing thing about the turkey hen is she's capable of keeping viable sperm cells for up to ten weeks after a single insemination," said Long. "The best we can do and still maintain high levels of fertility is about six hours."

If turkey researchers could find a way to increase the amount of time that they can store sperm for later use, it might make the process of artificial insemination easier and less time-consuming. This is a primary area of research for Long, who hopes that further study of molecular DNA may help explain other reproductive issues as well, including why some hens lay more eggs than others.
