In Brief

• Between 90 million and 70 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, a shallow sea flooded the central region of North America, subdividing the continent into eastern and western landmasses. Scientists refer to the western landmass as Laramidia.
• In the 1980s a researcher proposed that distinct dinosaur communities inhabited the northern and southern regions of Laramidia for several million years. Critics doubted that so many large animals could have shared this relatively small chunk of land, however.
• But over the past decade discoveries in southern Utah have bolstered the notion of distinct dinosaur communities in the north and south, revealing a host of species new to science?including many giant varieties.
• Exactly what enabled so many behemoths to coexist in such a small area remains unclear, but it may be that dinosaurs had lower energy requirements than today?s large terrestrial animals do or that plants during the Late Cretaceous provided more food than their modern-day counterparts.

On a cool September morning in 2010 my crew and I began our daily descent from camp back into deep time, walking single file down a steep, knife-edge ridge of sandstone and mudstone in southern Utah?s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Each of us carried water, a field notebook, lunch, a rock hammer and other hand tools. Heavier tools and materials?rock saws, picks, shovels, bags of plaster and swaths of burlap?awaited us half a mile away at the dig site. Even from the hilltop we could easily see the plaster jackets down in the quarry?alabaster beacons in a wilderness of arid, gray-striped badlands. Some of the irregular lumps were not much bigger than a loaf of bread. Others spanned 10 feet and tipped the scales at more than a ton. All contained the bony remains of animals that coexisted here 76 million years ago.

Kissing: Can It Make or Break A Relationship? ? wedding preview ...

This is my day to just spill it. Warning, I?m a talker and I love to write. I just imagine that you and I are sitting here with our feet up talking about what we like, what we watched last night and what we?re excited about. This is how I decide what to write about. What would we talk about? Let?s chat. The Bachelor and kissing.

Before I even go into how watching The Bachelor makes me feel queasy, I should tell you this about me: I?m a hopeless romantic but I either giggle, get shy or become really nervous in romantic situations. I read chick-lit books where the plot follows a woman who is usually struggling to realize she loves someone and, in the end, they fall in love. There are some steamy scenes in the middle (a la romance novel) and when I read the last page, the whole story is all packaged up and totally unrealistic. I believe that stuff. I watch TV with ZERO educational value and I?m not ashamed of any of this.

I?m a Bachelor fan but I am not a fan of Ben (the current Bachelor -if you?re not a fan). As I start to write, I have to remember that all of the people involved are human beings and have feelings. This is going to be the HARDEST thing to do. I?m ready to unleash. To me, kissing is so hot. There are even health benefits to kissing. Yes, I?ve researched. However, watching Ben kiss the girls on The Bachelor, makes me literally gag. Seriously! Look at the image above. It is so absolutely disgusting watching his sticky frog tongue jut out toward his prey and bring them in like a fly. Almost ALL of them have kissed Ben. I?ve got to know what it?s like.

Do you think kissing can make or break a relationship?

I once (almost) kissed a guy who started the process as if it was a sword fight. I almost puked. For real. I told the poor soul that I was drunk and getting sick. It was a better option than telling him that his kisses made me wretch. Regardless of how he looked, how great of a personality he had, I just couldn?t do it. That relationship was over before it started. Bachelor Ben would be in that category for me. When I see him and Courtney kiss?it?s like a great diet. I lose my appetite completely.

Oscar Nominee Rooney Mara Talks 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequels

'I hope that we get to make the other two ['Millennium Trilogy' novels],' actress tells MTV News on the Academy Awards red carpet.

It seems that the combination of Rooney Mara and David Fincher guarantees Oscar gold. The duo worked together on 2010's Academy Award-winning film "The Social Network" and immediately followed it up with an adaptation of Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." The movie ended up making $226 million worldwide and earned Mara her first Oscar nomination. So it makes sense that the duo would team up yet again to work on adapting the story's sequel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire."

Turns out that Mara hasn't learned too much about that plan, though. MTV News caught up with Mara on the Oscar red carpet and asked her if she had heard of anything about adapting the next two "Millennium Trilogy" novels, and she didn't have much news to share.

"I don't know anything. I wish that I had the answers," she said. "You know, I hope that we get to make the other two, but I just don't know anything yet."

Though Mara and Fincher have seemed like an inseparable team thus far, there is always the chance that he won't be able to direct "The Girl Who Played With Fire" or "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." Up next he'll be working on the TV series "House of Cards," so he could end up being too busy with that to dedicate his time to the rest of the franchise. Mara said she would understand if he were unable to direct her through the rest of the series.

"Yeah, I would respect that. I mean, of course it would be very difficult, but I would understand that and I would respect that," she said.

Last we heard, Sony still plans to move forward with adapting "The Girl Who Played With Fire." "['Dragon Tattoo'] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book," a rep from Sony told Entertainment Weekly back in January. The film is apparently on target for a late 2013 release date, though someone better keep Mara in the loop on that.

Fincher isn't the only one who has a busy schedule coming up. Mara is attached to films helmed by two other big-time directors: Steven Soderbergh and Terrence Malick. Her take? "I feel very lucky," she said.

Both films — "The Bitter Pill" and "Lawless," respectively — are due out in theaters in 2013, but some images were leaked that seemed to show Mara shooting with Malick and her co-star Ryan Gosling for "Lawless." It seemed fair to ask whether that means production has already started on the movie, but Mara said filming won't start anytime soon.

"We haven't started that yet. That's not for a while," she said.

Study IDs new marine protected areas in Madagascar

A new study by the University of California, Berkeley, Wildlife Conservation Society, and others uses a new scientific methodology for establishing marine protected areas in Madagascar that offers a "diversified portfolio" of management options ? from strict no-take zones to areas that would allow fishing.

The methodology looks at existing information on the country's climate, along with dependence on fisheries and marine resources, and applies three different planning approaches to establish priorities for management along the entirety of Madagascar's west coast.

The diversified portfolio approach to marine conservation greatly increases the likelihood of finding and implementing successful management that fits a country's needs while simplifying the process of picking locations and the most appropriate forms of marine management, the authors say.

Considering the need to develop a management regime for the reefs and mangroves of Madagascar that factors in the impacts of climate change, the methodology recommends a range of conservation areas with strict no-take protection as only one type of management recommendation.

The paper appears in the February 16th issue of the open access journal PLoS One. Authors include: Thomas Allnut, Merrill Baker, and Claire Kremen of the University of California, Berkeley; Tim McClanahan, Caleb McClennen, Andry Rakotomanjaka, and Tantely Tianarisoa of the Wildlife Conservation Society; Erwann Lagabrielle and Serge Andrefouet of the Institut de Recherche pour le D?veloppement; and Reg Watson of the University of British Columbia.

The authors say the process provides a more efficient and comprehensive way to plan on a large scale and found that several marine areas in Madagascar come out as conservation priorities across all methodologies. Specifically, these included reefs in the vicinity of the Barren Islands, the large shallow banks to the northwest and southwest, and the reefs of Juan de Nova.

The study highlights the differences in the country's regional patterns. These include heavy human pressure in the south and areas of high climate variability intermixed with lower vulnerability but high biodiversity in the northwest. Areas of particularly high biodiversity value include the islands, reefs, and bays of the northwest; the fringing reefs of the southwest; and the barrier reefs and islands of the central west coast.

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries on Earth yet has proposed to create over 1 million hectares (3,861 square miles) of protected areas to provide for the long-term conservation of its marine resources.

"It behooves countries, in the face of impending fisheries and climate crises, to plan and implement intelligent management that will increase the resilience of their natural marine resources," said co-author Tim McClanahan of the Wildlife Conservation Society, "This paper will provide a roadmap for Madagascar to plan and manage these resources and the methods should prove affordable and useful for the poorest countries where adaptation to climate change will make marine spatial planning a critical part of a successful response."

Co-author Caleb McClennen, WCS Director for Marine Programs, said: "Creation of protected areas is a key conservation strategy to safeguarding marine resources, but one size doesn't fit all. This study demonstrates the need for a comprehensive portfolio of management solutions from community based coastal fisheries to fully protected marine parks."

LF co-GM and interest for Saw RP

Hi there ^_^

I'm looking for a co-GM for a Saw roleplay that I can't seem to get out of my mind. It would center around a small group of people (4 or 5) being put into a grave situation in which they have to survive. I have a few traps in mind, as well as a want to incorporate a few timed tasks in the roleplay, both of which need some TLC to get together. I'm hoping for someone who is really good at coming up with psychological twists and someone who has some fresh ideas for a horror roleplay. I'm thinking this will be a more structured roleplay with a clear goal in mind, one in which the GMs will guide the players into completing tasks until they reach the goal, if they ever do. I would prefer that person to be at least somewhat knowledgeable about the Saw movie series, but if not I'm sure the Saw wiki will suffice. I'm really excited about this roleplay and I'm hoping I can get some interest in it because I think it would really be a fun experience, especially since it will have a clear goal to strive toward instead of being an open-ended roleplay.

Cunning super-parasitic wasps sniff out protected aphids and overwhelm their defenses

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? In the war between parasite and host, the parasitic wasp, Aphidius ervi, and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, are locked in a battle for survival. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biology shows that this cunning parasite sniffs out differences between protected and unprotected aphids, and alters its egg-laying strategy, in order to overwhelm aphid defenses and ensure survival of wasp offspring.

The wasp, A. ervi, lays an egg inside the pea aphid, where the egg hatches and converts the aphid's insides into a wasp nursery. The wasp larva uses the still-living aphid as a food source, eventually pupating inside the aphid and emerging as a fully-formed mature wasp. However the pea aphid is not defenseless. It is protected by a bacterial symbiont Hamiltonella defensa (and its associated bacteriophage APSE).

Although the wasps still lay their eggs, wasp larvae are unable to develop normally. Researchers from the Universities of Georgia and Arizona collaborated with researchers from Akita Prefectural University, Japan, to investigate what tactics the wasps might use to overcome the aphids' symbiont defense strategy. The researchers found that wasps which laid two eggs (superparasitism) in aphids infected with H. defensa and APSE were much more successful at producing live offspring.

However laying two eggs in uninfected hosts had little effect on the number of surviving wasps as only one wasp can complete development in each aphid. This suggests that having twice the amount of factors secreted by the developing wasp overpowers the protection due to bacterial infection, and is an adaption to ensure the survival of one wasp at the cost of two.

In a twist it seems that the wasps are able to work out which aphids are harboring the symbionts and which are not. Dr Kerry Oliver, who led this study, explained, "We discovered that A. ervi would preferentially lay two eggs in infected hosts, and a single egg if the aphids were unprotected. We don't for sure how wasps discriminate, but, when we looked for differences between the aphids, we found that infected aphids produced less of the compound trans-b-farnesene. This compound is a major component of aphid alarm pheromone and wasps are known to use this cue to find hosts."

Whatever the trick that they are using to work out which aphids are infected, wasps appear to be able to lay just enough eggs to stay ahead in the arms race.

You might not agree but we see it that only you can do this.

We understand that there are many ways to work on self improvement and a person can reasonably do only so much at a time. If you are aware of something that you think can be worked on and that will benefit you, explore it and see where it takes you.

HAIKOU, China -- The playing field for the inaugural World Ladies Championships (WLC), which will take place March 2-4, 2012 at Mission Hills Hainan, has been announced.

It includes a number of leading players from the Ladies European Tour (LET), such as England's Melissa Reid and South African Lee-Anne Pace. Also scheduled to compete are the best Chinese players like Shanshan Feng from the LPGA Tour. Leading amateur Lydia Ko -- one of the youngest ever players, male or female, to win a professional event, will also participate.

Conceived by Mission Hills, the WLC is a new, ground breaking event designed to support the further development of tournament golf -- both in China and around the world -- ahead of golf's return to the Olympics in 2016.

The Championships, to be played on the Mission Hills Hainan's Vintage Course, will adopt a unique three-in-one game format that will see players competing as individuals as well as for the pride of their country. There will be concurrent, 54-hole competitions in three categories -- individual professional stroke-play, individual amateur stroke-play and professional teams.

As the event is a stroke-play competition, professional players taking part in the team event will be competing against their playing partners in the solo competition for the Individual Professional title.

The Professional Team competition will see Melissa Reid, who finished second on the LET money list in 2011 and won two LET tournaments, join forces with up-and-coming compatriot Florentyna Parker.

Reid said: "I'm really excited to be coming to Mission Hills Hainan for the World Ladies Championships. I've never been to Mission Hills before and I've heard so many great things about it that it will be good to finally see it for myself!

"It's always great to play in a team event. It's something that we don't often get to do once we turn professional. Florentyna and I have known each other since we were about 13-years-old so we go back a long way and we will be very comfortable playing with each other."

Reid and Parker will face tough competition from South African pair Lee-Anne Pace and Ashleigh Simon, who won the 2011 Portugal Ladies Open. Pace had a fantastic season in 2010 when she won five LET titles and finished top the order of merit.

After posting nine top-ten finishes and three runner-up spots in 2011, she will be keen to break into the winner's circle again.

Pace said: "I can't wait to start at the WLC. China is a lucky place for me as I've won two championships there already. I've heard a lot about Mission Hills, they have excellent courses and state-of-the-art training facilities -- all which I look forward to seeing."

A player who has already made her mark in Hainan is Frances Bondad, who won the 2011 Sanya Open and will team-up with fellow Australian Nikki Garrett.

Bondad is excited about her chances: "We have a very strong Aussie contingent in Haikou. Not only are we competitive with each other, but very supportive as well. I always play well in China so I could be up there!"

An amateur player grabbing the headlines at the moment is New Zealander Lydia Ko. The top-ranked golfer in the women's World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Ko last month became one of the youngest ever winners of a professional tour event with a four-shot victory in the Women's New South Wales Open. January also saw her become the youngest winner of the Australian Women's Amateur following a second place finish in the Australian Women's Stroke Play Championship. She will compete in the Individual Amateur competition as one of eight elite amateurs in the field.

With golf returning to the Olympic Games in 2016, Ko believes that the WLC provides her with a great development opportunity: "I think getting amateurs to play with professionals is only going to be good for the game: it inspires us to work harder and realize that we are not far off their level.

"This only pushes me as a player to work hard and improve my skills more so that when it is time to match it with professional players, I can. The Olympic Games in 2016 has been a goal for me ever since it was announced that golf was returning to the Olympics. To represent my country New Zealand would be an honor."

Co-sanctioned by the LET and China LPGA Tour, the WLC will offer a total prize purse of US$600,000. Its field will feature 108 elite players, from the LET, as well as the LPGA Tours of the U.S., Korea, Japan and China.

The Daily Caller has obtained?documents, emails and communications showing how President Barack Obama?s Federal Communications Commission demolished wireless?broadband?company LightSquared?s competition through a pattern of regulatory decisions apparently aimed at establishing an ?open-access? Internet in the United States.

The FCC?successfully green-lighted?LightSquared?s corporate formation in 2009 by allowing Wall Street hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners to purchase majority ownership in satellite company SkyTerra. A major obstacle that still remained in LightSquared?s way was competitor GlobalStar.

GlobalStar had a similar operation to the one LightSquared was building at the time. A major difference, though, was GlobalStar?s already-orbiting satellites, and the broadband Internet access it was already providing to Americans in rural areas of the country.

GlobalStar leased terrestrial spectrum to Open Range Communications, a company that provided broadband Internet access to customers in underserved parts of rural America. Open Range?s business model depended on a 2008 loan, worth $264 million, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Rural Utilities Service.

In 2008 the FCC gave GlobalStar a 16-month waiver from so-called ?gating??rules, which required it to guarantee that its satellite service would be continuously available?everywhere it offered?broadband?service, and also required it to maintain spare satellites in case of an urgent need. GlobalStar had said the issues its system faced would be fixed when it could launch 24 new satellites, which it planned to do by July 1, 2010.

Citing the earthquake and disruptions because of the global financial meltdown, GlobalStar filed a request with the Obama administration?s FCC on Dec. 14, 2009,?asking for an additional temporary waiver from the agency?s requirements so it could continue building its network.

The FCC didn?t acknowledge receipt of the extension request until March 5, 2010, and didn?t open it up for public notice until four weeks later, on April 2.

During the months while GlobalStar?s request languished in the FCC?s slow-moving bureaucracy, the agency was helping to finalize the sale of SkyTerra to Harbinger. That company would ultimately become LightSquared.

On Feb. 26, 2010,?one week before the FCC acknowledged GlobalStar?s request, Harbinger and the FCC agreed on conditions that would forbid LightSquared from selling to Verizon and AT&T any?spectrum it would later acquire.
