In the current study, Allen et al. were able to collect a variety of relevant data as well as blood samples from 3,980 men, all aged between 40 and 69 years of age and surveyed between 2003 and 2008:

- 1,902 men had never had a prior PSA test (?unscreened? patients)
The men were stratified by age group (40-49 years; 50-59 years; and 60-69 years), and their PSA values by age group are shown in the table immediately below:

- Increasing age was associated with a higher probability of a prior PSA test.
- Only 25 percent of men in the 40-49 year age group had had a prior PSA test.

- 72 percent of men in the 60-69 year age group had had a prior PSA test.
- Screening rates were higher among
- Men with a known family history of prostate cancer (68 vs. 50 percent) compared to those with no family history
- Men with health insurance coverage (58 vs. 21 percent) compared to no health insurance coverage
- Caucasians (59 vs. 44 percent) compared to non-Caucasians
- No significant differences were observed in the relative PSA values of screened vs. unscreened men when stratified by age, by family history, by race/ethnicity, or by health insurance status.
- Very few men under age 60 years had a PSA level > 10 ng/ml.
These data are inherently interesting, but it is difficult to know exactly what to make of them other than to say that they confirm that the PSA test is not exactly a definitive test for risk of clinically significant prostate cancer in population-based cohorts of individuals.
It does seem highly likely, based on these data, that many men never get an initial PSA test until they qualify for health insurance under Medicare ? given that only 21 percent of men without health insurance had had a prior PSA test and that 72 percent of men in the 60-69 year age group had had a prior PSA test (compared to much lower percentages in the younger age groups).

Chinese and Russian cooperation now crucial in ending the violence in Syria
When the UN Security Council voted last month to authorise a monitoring mission in Syria, it was a rare moment of unity and solidarity for the 15-member council. The outcome of the vote led to the deployment of approximately 300 UN monitors across five Syrian cities. Their sole mandate being, to apply all possible efforts to stop acts of violence, specifically targeted at civilians in the country.
However, early on Sunday, news broke that hundreds of villagers, including at least 32 children were killed in the village of El-Houleh, a Syrian town near the central city of Homs. The strong suggestion being that the government regime of Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the massacre. UN observers have reported that aside from the 32 children, monitors counted more than 60 dead adults, bringing the overall casualties to approximately 92 with more than 300 wounded. In response to these allegations, the Syrian government accused ?terrorists?, (its usual phrase for the opposition) of killing the civilians.
In a joint statement by the secretary general of the UN and the joint special envoy for Syria, condemned the brutal crime involving the indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force which is seen as a flagrant violation on international law and of the commitments that the Syrian government made to cease the use of heavy weapons on civilians.
The violence in El-Houleh has also been seen as the most flagrant violation of the UN and Arab League peace plan which was negotiated and brokered by former UN secretary general, Kofi Annan in April this year.
Since al-Assad?s government and opposition forces accepted Annan?s peace plan in March, at least 1?635 people have been killed. The events in El-Houleh are certain to call into question the continued effectiveness of the six-point peace plan going forward.
The reaction to the news of renewed bloodshed and loss of innocent civilian life has also taken on a sectarian undertone. Anti-Assad forces have said that much of the slaughter had been carried out by pro-government thugs referred to as ?shabiha?, from the surrounding area. El-Houleh is a Sunni Muslim town, while three villages around it are mostly Alawite and a fourth is Shi?ite Muslim.
Since the president and the core of his security services are also Alawites, an off-shoot of Shi?ite Islam, there has been renewed calls for sectarian revenge. This is a dangerous development as anti-government rebels are led by a majority of Sunni Muslims. The threat being that renewed tensions and conflict along sectarian lines could plunge Syria into further turmoil and also open the door for al-Qaeda?s involvement in the Syrian uprising.
The Free Syrian Army who are leading the revolt against the incumbent Syrian regime have stressed that the fight is for democracy, not sharia. However, if the situation on the ground remains the same this could potentially open the door for jihadists. Also given Syria?s geo-political strategic significance in the region, any further escalation in civil unrest and the infiltration of al-Qaeda could prove disastrous for long term stability in the region.
With the UN-Arab League six-point peace plan seemingly ineffective and current secretary general of the UN ? Ban Ki-moon ? admitting that the UN does not currently have a ?plan B? for Syria, the only realistic solution lies with the UN Security Council.
The 15-member council includes five permanent members (China,?France,?Russia, the?United Kingdom and the?United States of America) and? 10 elected non-permanent members (Azerbaijan, Columbia, Germany, Guatemala, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, Togo and South Africa).
In February, Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that backed an Arab League plan to facilitate a political transition in Syria. Under?Article 27?of the?UN Charter, Security Council decisions on all substantive matters require the affirmative votes of nine members. A negative vote, or?veto, also known as the rule of ?great power?unanimity?, by a permanent member prevents adoption of a proposal, even if it has received the required number of affirmative votes.
The reasoning behind the Chinese and Russian veto vote on Syria was based on the principle that proposed action may further complicate events in Syria. In addition, that any move may put undue emphasis on pressuring the Syrian government, prejudge the result of the dialogue or impose any solution would not help resolve the Syrian issue.
Ostensibly Russian and Chinese concern also linger that the UN?s authorisation of all necessary measures to protect civilians was used to bring down Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi?s regime. An outcome that the Russians and Chinese claim they do not want to see repeated in Syria.
More strategically for Russia however, is the fact that the Kremlin?s only military base outside the former Soviet Union is in Syria, and also sells weapons to al-Assad?s government. Therefore many observers understand that it is not necessarily within Russian interests to see the end of al-Assad?s regime.
Chinese special interest in Syria and vetoing the Security Council?s resolution is grounded in the fact that Beijing?s ? Shanghai Cooperation Organisation??(SCO) ? which ?is an?intergovernmental?mutual security organisation founded in 2001 ? is attempting to grow it?s clout as a regional and international force as is seen in the East as a counterbalance to?NATO?and the?United States.
However, with increasing bloodshed and loss of life in Syria, the Chinese and Russian stance on al-Assad?s regime can no longer be sustained. These two powerful countries have the diplomatic strength to assist in a negotiated settlement with Damascus. The only tangible solution being that al-Assad steps-down and a roadmap is put in place to hold elections in the coming 12 months. However, for this to happen there will need to be a unified vote in the Security Council which is scheduled to meet for an emergency sitting in the coming days.
Now more than ever is the time for the Security Council and the international community to be united in its response to Syria. But this will take decisive and unified action and resolve on behalf of China and Russia.

Update: Furman Officially Introduces Richie Meade as First Men's Lacrosse Coach
Furman University held a news conference Saturday at Gillette Stadium, formally introducing Richie Meade as head coach. Inside Lacrosse reported the news late last week. The original story is here, followed by the school's official release.
Sources have confirmed to Inside Lacrosse that Richie Meade is expected to be named the first head coach at Furman. Meade and an official within Furman's athletic department declined to comment when reached; however, the Furman athletic department has confirmed that they've planned a press conference for Saturday in Boston to name their first head coach.
Inside Lacrosse reported on April 20 that Meade led a list of candidates?that the newly formed South Carolina Division I men's program was considering, and sources have told IL that Meade visited campus last week and has been in negotiations with the university.?
Meade's expected hire comes after his much-publicized departure from the Naval Academy sidelines last May. Among the outspoken critics of the decisions that led to Meade's stepping down was Denver coach Bill Tierney, who outlined his arguments for IL last year. When asked this week about the prospect of Meade taking the reins at Furman, Tierney said: "If Richie Meade is the first coach at Furman, it's not that the wrongs of last year have been righted, it shows his tenure as a great lacrosse coach has shined through and he's had his effect on other people looking to build a great program, that others have recognized what he's done and what he's capable of doing."?
After 17 seasons at Navy, during which he amassed a 142-97 record and led the Midshipmen to the 2004 national championship game, Meade spent the last year as a tenured phys ed professor and teaching fellow in the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the Academy. Earlier this year, Meade was named the head coach for the U.S. Team for the 2014 FIL World Championships in Denver.
Meade played lacrosse at North Carolina and coached for four seasons at the University of Baltimore before taking over the Navy program.
Inside Lacrosse first reported that Furman was adding men's lacrosse as a Division I sport on Feb. 3, and the university formally announced the decision on Feb. 9.

FOXBOROUGH, MASS. ? Furman University director of athletics Dr. Gary Clark announced today that U.S. men's national senior team coach Richie Meade has been named the school's first men's head lacrosse coach.
The announcement was made by Clark and Furman president Rod Smolla at a press conference at Gillette Stadium, site of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Furman, a private, co-educational university of 2,700 students in Greenville, S.C., and member of the Southern Conference, announced on Feb. 9 that it would add men's and women's lacrosse to its Division I athletics program. The teams will begin varsity competition by the 2014-15 academic year.
"Richie Meade is the ideal person to jump start our new men's lacrosse program at Furman," Clark said. "He sports a tremendous combination of experience and leadership to help grow lacrosse in a non-traditional area of the country. We are thrilled to have Richie join the Furman family."
Said Meade, "My family and I are very excited with the opportunity to join the Furman community. I am grateful to President Smolla and Gary Clark for their faith and trust in me. We will build our program with integrity, substance, and toughness. Our goal will be to compete with passion, skill and honor, and to graduate individuals who will make a difference in the world and reflect the values of a great American university."
Meade was named head coach of the U.S. men's national senior team by US Lacrosse in December. He is the 12th head coach in the history of the men's senior team program, and he will lead Team USA in its title defense at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Denver, Colo., July 10-19.
"We are very pleased that such a well-respected and highly qualified coach as Richie Meade has agreed to lead our men's lacrosse program," said Smolla. "His connections in the sport are unparalleled, and he has enjoyed great success in coaching and recruiting at the national level. We welcome Richie and his family to the Furman community, and we look forward to seeing the men's lacrosse program grow and prosper under his guidance."
A 35-year veteran of collegiate coaching, Meade most recently served as head coach for the United States Naval Academy men's team from 1994-2011, where he led the Midshipmen to a 142-97 (.589) record. In his 21-year career as a head coach, including four years at the University of Baltimore, Meade compiled a 162-120 (.585) ledger.
During Meade's head coaching tenure at Navy, his teams claimed five Patriot League regular season and tournament titles, appeared in seven NCAA tournaments, and racked up 39 All-America citations. In 2004, Navy advanced to the national championship game and Meade was honored with the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award as National Coach of the Year. He also was twice named Patriot League Coach of the Year (2004 & '07).
Meade began his coaching career as an assistant at Duke University in 1977. Following a two-year stint in Durham, he moved on to the University of North Carolina, where he served as an assistant for one year before accepting his first head coaching job at the University of Baltimore (1980-83). In 1984 he was named defensive coordinator at Navy (1984-88) before returning to Chapel Hill (1989-90) for a two-year stint as offensive coordinator. He accepted the same post, as well as an instructor's role in physical education, at the United States Military Academy in 1991, remaining there for three seasons, before returning to Navy as head coach in 1994, becoming the seventh lacrosse mentor in school history.
In addition his coaching duties with the Midshipmen, he also served as a tenured professor of physical education and is a Senior Fellow at the Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the Naval Academy.
He has served the sport in a variety of administrative positions, including the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Rules Advisory Committee, U.S. Lacrosse Men's Coaches Council, and NCAA Rules and Equipment Committee. Since 2005, he has been president of the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) and over the last two years has served as executive director of the Wounded Warrior Project Lacrosse.
A native of Williston Park, N.Y., Meade attended and played lacrosse at Nassau (N.Y.) Community College. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina, from which he graduated with a B.A. in 1976 with a degree in parks and recreation administration. He later added an M.S. from UNC in 1979.
Meade is a member of both the New York Metropolitan Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame and University of Baltimore Athletic Hall of Fame.
He and his wife, Sue, have three daughters: Jillian, Shannon Grace, and Cassidy.

Floats and parade participants decked in red, white and blue peace signs and tie-die kicked off the summer on Memorial Day weekend in Potter Valley, followed by an impressive display of young'uns calf-roping, bronc riding and mutton-bustin' at the town's rodeo grounds Saturday.
A "Red, White and Groovy" themed parade started the 66th annual Potter Valley Spring Festival and Rodeo Saturday with several floats and entries from area businesses. People lined the streets to watch rodeo royalty, past and present, ride by, along with classic cars, amid the floats.
Wood-cutting and ax-throwing competitions were held as the 2012 grand marshals and rodeo royalty were introduced, and while Stetsons covered hearts during the singing of the National Anthem before the competitions began.
The competitive events started with sheep riding, an event where young children find purchase in the animal's thick wool and hang on as long as they can while the small but tough sheep tries to buck them off, much like the calf riding, saddle bronc and bareback events that followed.
First place went to Emmasu Hawk of Blocksburg, with Garret Nunnemaker of Willits coming in second.
Children in age categories of 10 and younger, 11 through 13 and 14 through 18 competed in events that included pole bending -- similar to barrel racing -- calf riding and tie-down, breakaway, steer stopping, bareback riding and saddle bronc.
There was also an event for the 11 through 13
category where cowgirls holding mops atop their horses attempted to daub a loosed steer with orange paint.The first boy out of the chute for the 10 and younger calf riding competition, Joel Slates of Potter Valley, fell off and was stepped on by the animal, bringing emergency medical technicians to the arena. The boy's arm was splinted and he left the ring on his feet.
Emily Mayo, residence undisclosed, also brought EMTs to the ring when she fell off her calf and was briefly caught and dragged. She also walked out of the ring after a brief pause in the events.
The 66th annual Potter Valley Spring Festival and Rodeo continues today, bright and early at 7 a.m. with a Cowboy Church with Pastor Tony Arnds, CCRPA and local rodeo slack at 8 a.m., noon barbecue and the CCRPA and local rodeo at 1 p.m., followed by lawn mower racing.
A Gymkhana and Play Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at the rodeo grounds.

S. Korea, Japan keep Olympic volleyball hopes alive
TOKYO (AFP) ?

South Korea have one foot in the London Olympics after they whipped Thailand in three sets in the women?s volleyball qualifying tournament Saturday, while Japan remain in contention despite losing heavily.
The South Korean women only need to defeat Peru on Sunday to ensure their place at the Games after their 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 victory.
?We are going to keep our concentration for tomorrow?s match against Peru. Hopefully we can win. I also hope that the three Asian teams ? Korea, Japan and Thailand ? will qualify for the Olympics,? said coach Kim Hyung-Sil.
The top three sides in the eight-team round robin and the best-placed Asian side among the rest will qualify for the Olympics.
Already there are Russia, the two-time world champions, who outgunned Japan in straight sets to secure top place in the standings with one day to go in the tournament in Tokyo.
They have 18 points from six wins out of six, ahead of South Korea and Serbia, who each have 12 points. Japan have 11 points in fourth place, followed by Thailand in fifth on nine points.
If it stays like that, Thailand will miss out at the expense of Japan. Japan and Serbia go head-to-head in the other big game.

An email sent by the 38 Studios company to workers and obtained by The Associated Press says they were notified of the "non-voluntary and non-disciplinary" layoffs on Thursday.
38 Studios moved from Massachusetts after Rhode Island agreed to back the loan. Officials said the deal would bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue. The company was more than two weeks late this month on a $1.1 million payment to the state's Economic Development Corporation. State officials said the company wasn't able to make its payroll.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee said 38 Studios was facing "grim times" but he wasn't abandoning efforts to salvage the company and protect the state's investment. The state would likely be responsible for some of 38 Studios' debts whishould it collapse.
The email to 38 Studios' employees thanked them for their dedication to the company.
"The company is experiencing an economic downturn," the email read. "To avoid further losses ... the company has decided that a companywide layoff is absolutely necessary."
The company had 300 employees in Providence, Chafee said. It also has an office in Maryland. It released its much-anticipated first game, "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning," to strong reviews in February.?Schilling, who also pitched for Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia and Arizona and was on three World Series winners, has said the game performed well, but Chafee has said it was a flop.
Attempts to reach?Schilling?and company executives on Thursday were unsuccessful.
Chafee opposed the loan guarantee deal in 2010 while he was running for governor but has since said he wants to find a way to help make 38 Studios successful without giving it additional taxpayer assistance. But he has acknowledged the state is "in deep."
"I'm still continuing to work for 38 Studios," he said.
38 Studios has requested millions of dollars in tax credits under an incentive program for film companies and video game studios. Chafee spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger said Thursday state officials were trying to determine whether 38 Studios is incorporated out of state, making it ineligible for the incentives.
The political fallout from the state's involvement with 38 Studios continued to play out as two members of the 12-member Economic Development Corporation board, which approved the loan guarantee in 2010, stepped down.
Board Vice Chairwoman Helena Foulkes said in a statement Thursday she spoke with Chafee and decided it was best that she resign. She said she wished him luck "in this very difficult challenge."
Board member Stephen Lane has also decided to resign, Chafee announced Thursday afternoon.
Two other board members, Timothy Babineau and Daniel Sullivan, asked not to be reappointed to the board, Chafee said. The board members had been serving past the expiration of their term, Chafee said.
Last week, the EDC's executive director, Keith Stokes, submitted his resignation to Chafee, and Chafee accepted it.
Chafee, asked if he was seeking the resignation of other board members who supported the 38 Studios loan guarantee, said "yes, we're having those discussions."

TyJuan Woodard Dead After Being Shot By Friend, Covered With Blanket And Left On Couch
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- An Arkansas man assumed the boy wrapped in a blanket on the futon in his home was his sleeping cousin. But hours later he realized it was a 14-year-old boy he'd never seen before who, police determined Thursday, had been shot while playing with a gun with a friend.
Little Rock police said the boy, TyJuan Woodard, died after he and a 13-year-old friend were playing with a gun that accidentally fired and shot him in the chest Wednesday. The younger boy had covered Woodard's body with a blanket, then left and spent the night elsewhere without telling anyone what happened, police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings said.
One of the 13-year-old's relatives saw someone wrapped in a blanket on the futon Wednesday night. Thinking the boy was a cousin who had fallen asleep, he didn't disturb him, according to a police report.
A few hours later, though, the man said he realized that the person on the couch wasn't his cousin. He then picked Woodard up and noticed he wasn't breathing.
Someone called 911 and when officers arrived, they found the boy lying face-up on the floor, according to the police report. There was blood on his face and chest, and as medics lifted his shirt, they found what looked like a bullet wound.
Police said everyone in the home said they didn't know the boy or what had happened. Woodard lives elsewhere and had previously run away from home, Hastings said. Hastings said police talked to the 13-year-old Thursday morning.
Hastings said he wasn't sure how the boys got a hold of the gun, which belongs to one of the 13-year-old's relatives. He said they were playing with the gun in a bedroom when it went off and shot the 14-year-old in the chest.
No charges have been filed, but Hastings said the case will be forwarded to the prosecutor. One of the prosecutors, John Johnson, said his office hasn't received the case file yet.
