Morgan Spurlock debuted his latest feat in the documentary arts at the True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri on February 28. Comic Con, Episode IV: A Fan?s Hope is everything that a comic lover could dream of in a documentary.
Spurlock and his team followed five storylines through the weekend of the world?s largest convention- Comic Con. Each story showed the audience that Comic Con isn?t just a weekend for nerds from all over the globe to get together and geek out; hopes and dreams are made and squashed at this weekend-long geek-retreat in San Diego.
We meet a bartender in Columbia, Missouri who?s an avid comic book fan going to the festival in hopes to find someone who will publish his artwork. There?s a rival for our bartender friend though (at least, that?s how the movie seems to portray the other comic-artist hopeful). This Air Force member, just like the bartender, hopes to find someone who is willing to work with his art.
Then, we meet a small-town girl who designs costumes based on video games in her garage. Her goal at Comic Con? To get some exposure for her craft and bring her a brighter future. Her dreams are bigger than the town that she comes from.
We then encounter the comic book collector, who calls himself a survivor. He is still thriving in the comic book business, despite how many collectors can no longer afford their hobby-turned-occupation. He plans on selling one of the most rare comics every printed- Red Raven. If he sells it, it?ll do more than wonders for his life.
The final story line could easily be the funniest of the film. Two star-crossed lovers who met at the convention the previous year join the rest of the crew of this movie. They love each other. They love nerdy things. They love the convention. But, will they get the chance to live happily ever after when ?popping the question? turns out to be harder than it looks?
While watching Comic Con, you?ll laugh. You?ll cry. You?ll cringe at the awkwardness of so many of the visitors of the convention. But, Spurlock and his crew manage to interpret the film like the greatest comic book movie you could ever imagine. You know you?re watching a documentary, but the intensity, romance, and hope that each character possess makes it feel like you?re watching real-life super heroes achieve (or not) their dreams. It?s as if our favorite comic books have come to life, chuck with love, loss, bad guys, and good guys. And watching those real-life stories come to life on the big screen is almost as good as watching Superman fly through the skies any day.
