Perfume Review: Rose Ikebana for Women by Hermes | asian-music ...

Rose Ikebana for women by Hermes was one of the first perfumes of the Hermessence line, which was originally conceived as a series of four fragrances, created by perfume maker Jean-Claude Ellena. All of them have a minimalist structure, with this fragrance in particular being inspired by Ikebana, a Japanese form of art, also with a minimalist philosophy. The purpose here is to represent the same concept in perfumery, with a delicate rose surrounded by complementary notes, which strengthen the idea of morning dew on rose petals.

The packaging presents a traditional Hermes bottle, the same used for the ?Un Jardin? collection, and for other fragrances of the same perfume house like Eau d?Orange Verte and Caleche. According to the Hermes website, the main ingredients are only two: roses and rhubarb.

In its opening, the fragrance shows a very sweet and fruity note of rose (similar to the one in Nina Ricci L?Air du Temps for women). In the background, there are tones of litchis, damascus and redcurrant, which quickly takes on a sourer tone. The middle phase takes relatively long to arrive, about one hour, and it?s marked by a much higher intensity (it could easily fill a small room), with the roses still dominant, but becoming soapier. After two hours, the floral aggregates fruity and honey notes, and it will keep the same structure for at least four more hours. At the end of the middle phase, rose is spicier, leaving room to peony and the official rhubarb (one of the most common among Hermes fragrance notes). In the end, peony stands out (very fresh and classic, like the one in Chloe perfume), more intense than the rose, with red fruits integrated with the sour rhubarb notes, on a sweet base of honey.

Although the Hermessence collection is labelled as unisex, the main note of rose makes this Rose Ikebana by Hermes a very feminine perfume from the very start. The elegant and young style makes it suitable for a daily use, both for social and solitary occasions. In the office, the aroma draws attention with a young and professional style, similar to the one of Pleasures Bloom by Est?e Lauder, but more classic. For a night use, the aroma manages to remain very intense, way above any other odor of the environment, including other more aggressive fragrances. The perfume manages to be elegant enough for a formal event, and almost irreverent (if you like the idea) for an informal party. For romantic occasions, the fruity notes of rose and peony feel quite innocent at moments, and will be attractive even from a close distance, in spite of the quite high intensity. The age range is wide in general terms, between 15 and 60, although women from 20 to 45 will take better advantage of it.
