One of the biggest challenges anyone can have is parenting and raising children. Kids will be kids, and we try to love them as much as we can through the hard times. When you watch your kids get older, you also see their personalities change which is part of the fun. Although kids can have personality quirks that are cute, and sometimes difficult, it is fun to watch the change. Sure, we make our fair share of mistakes, and that is especially true with our first one. It is most difficult for first-time parents because they have little understanding of the parenting process. However there is a huge amount of parenting information available, today, and we will contribute ours to help you over the bumps.
Toddlers present an unique challenge to parents, as they?ll often test the very limits of your patience. Very often, young children will behave inappropriately in public places; in such cases, you should respond right away. Don?t try to disregard it out of embarrassment or wait till hours later, when the children will have forgotten all about it. The only time that you should take is waiting until you get back to your car or a place that?s at least a little private.
Even though the kids may need discipline, you don?t want to subject them to this in full view of others. It should be enough that you don?t approve of their actions; you don?t need to humiliate them in front of others. Teenage children have got to be the most difficult to deal with of any age of child rearing. Both mental and physical changes are beginning to occur, something that will make them very off-balanced and difficult to deal with. You can help yourself and your teens by avoiding the one thing you hated when you were a teen: yet another lecture. Teenagers like to be talked to, not talked at, which is how you will maintain an ongoing conversation with them. However, rather than defaulting to the lecture tone and demeanor, simply talk to them as adults. If you are feeling bad, you do not want someone talking down to you. Your teenagers will appreciate your effort to speak to them in a way that doesn?t seem or feel condescending.
One of the worst parenting mistakes you can make is to allow children to break the rules you?ve established without suffering any consequences. In other words, there has to be consistency between what you tell your kids about consequences and what you actually do when they break the rules. Some parents allow their children to avoid consequences by crying or begging, and this undermines any attempts at discipline. It can be very hard to turn things around once your children know that the limits you set are not really firm. Just as they?ll figure it out if your rules can be safely ignored, if you remain firm and don?t waver, this lesson will sink in as well. You?re actually doing them a favor by teaching them early on that there can be unpleasant results when they break a rule. The earlier you can apply the right parenting principles, the better, as this allows you to lay the groundwork for a good relationship with them. Consistency is one of the most important traits a parent can have, so as you find effective parenting methods, stay with them.
